Wine Academy Austria

Wine Academy Austria

The Wine Academy is an autonomous concern, financially independent and supported 90% by the income from the seminars it presents. Every year, more than 15,000 people participate in more than 750 of the Wine Academy’s seminars. The Wine Academy is also – under the auspices of the AWMB – a participant in the pan-European informational programme ‘Wine in Moderation’, which strives toward promoting responsible interaction with wine.

Along with its educational activities all over Austria, the Austrian Wine Academy is continually becoming more deeply involved in international circles. Its courses are now held in Germany, Switzerland, the Alto Adige, Hungary and the Czech Republic. One new development is the collaboration with the Instituto Grandi Marchi and the Palazzo Antinori in Florence, where WSET Diploma courses from the Wine Academy are offered in English since 2017.

For wine industry professionals, the Wine Academy offers the famous multi-year WEINAKADEMIKER DIPLOMA in German-speaking Europe, which culminates in successful participants earning the prestigious title ‘Weinakademiker’.

Since its founding in 1991, the Austrian Wine Academy has developed into the most highly regarded wine- education institution in continental Europe, while at the same time being an important factor in the furtherance of wine education standards in Austria.

Institute of Masters of Wine

Qualification to become a Master of Wine demands comprehensive knowledge of the international wine business, wine distribution and marketing, and requires voluminous knowledge about wines from all over the world. Dr Josef Schuller MW, Managing Director of the Austrian Wine Academy, was the first individual from Austria to earn this prestigious title in 1998.

As one of the primary sponsors of the Institute Masters of Wine, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board is involved in many activities of the IMW. Through this, the AWMB gains valuable contacts, organises Austrian wine tastings, and has becoming a meeting place for MWs at international trade fairs. The one-week ‘Stage One’ course for aspiring MWs from numerous nations takes place for years now in Europe exclusively at the Austrian Wine Academy in Rust.

Wine & Spirit Education Trust

The training programme of the WSET has established itself very solidly in the past fifty years; since then more than seventy thousand candidates per year take examinations with the WSET or its international partners.

The WSET offers a progressively-structured qualification in wine and spirits at more than 600 centres in seventy countries; succesful completion of the highest level of training is rewarded with the WSET DIPLOMA IN WINES AND SPRITS, which at the same time is the recommended preliminary step for those wishing to prepare for the Master of Wine training programme. The Austrian Wine Academy has provided training for this diploma in cooperation with the WSET for more than twenty-five years now, and in doing so annually graduates 10–15% of the more than 300 worldwide diplomates.
