The Austrian Wine Sommelier Competition returned to New York City in 2020. The format proves to be particularly suitable for the participating sommeliers to achieve a profound examination of and commitment to Austrian wine.
Sommelier Competition

After completing the first portion of the competition consisting of a theory and blind tasting online exam the three finalists went on to compete during an online final showcasing their in-depth knowledge of Austrian wine as well as some of their favorite food pairing selections and producers.
We are happy to announce that the winner of Austria's Best Sommelier 2020 is:
- Suzanne Destio | The Nomad New York City
Suzanne won a trip to VieVinum 2021 in the magnificent rooms of the Vienna Hofburg.
She was closly followed by Jordanne Pascual (Wallsé) and Ryan Robinson (Cornerstone Restaurant). These two top sommeliers each received a copy of Wine in Austria, the history book published by Willi Klinger and Karl Vocelka.

Kick-Off Event

To kick-off New York´s Best Somm 2020, Austrian Wine hosted an online Masterclass led by Jesse Becker MS. This gave participants the unique opportunity to taste Austrian wines, receive valuable study materials and insights to size up their competition. The participants received a tasting set so they can follow the online Masterclass.
