This year, the third Austria’s Best Sommelier Competition was held in Chicago following the successful Sommelier Competitions in New York City 2016 and San Francisco 2018.

The event was designed to encourage sommeliers to dive deep into Austrian wines focusing on both theory and tasting.

The kick-off seminar lead by Jesse Becker MS in August, was  the competition’s  starting signal followed by an intensive qualifying exam from which only the top 30 competitors were admitted.

The day of the competition, around 30 competitors took the theoretical and tasting exam at Chicago’s Maple & Ash and three finalists faced the ingenious judgment of Willi Klinger (Managing Director AWMB), Chris Yorke (Managing Director AWMB from 2020) and Jesse Becker MS.

The winner was Anthony Minne of Winebow, closely followed by Matt Sussmann of Table, Donkey, and Stick, and Rebecca Miles-Steiner of City Winery Chicago. Although only the top competitor was meant to win a trip to the biennial VieVinum fair 2020 taking place in the Vienna’s Hofburg, in a generous twist, all three finalists secured a spot.
