From the 08th - 11th of May international wine enthusiasts went on a journey organized by the AWMB through the Austrian wine regions. Among the participants were around 80 wine journalists and wine critics as well as selected wine merchants and sommeliers from a total of 40 different countries.

After almost 20 years, Austria had the honor of hosting a major international event for the sommelier scene in 2017 again: the European Sommelier Championship. This provided the unique opportunity to bring the Wine Summit and the Championship in a fruitful symbiosis. The opening event of the European Championships on the 8th of May in the Orangerie Schönbrunn thus became the prelude to the Wine Summit.

Four of the original 37 sommeliers fought in the final act of the European Championship for several hours in demanding tasks for the victory. Raimonds Tomsons from Latvia won the coveted title of "Best Sommelier in Europe and Africa" with impeccable performance and skill.
